Taurine is a free-form beta amino acid, that is essential in cats, and conditionally essential in dogs. Taurine doesn't incorporate itself with other amino acids to form protein, but like l-carnitine functions metabolically in the body. Taurine is an inhibitory amino acid that is released from the brain during seizures. It is believed it serves a protective role in seizures. Clinically many practitioners report a lessening of seizure activity with taurine, but this is anecdotal as studies have not shown this effect to be in all cases.

Cats have an absolute need for taurine in their diets, and younger, growing reproductively active cats need about 250 mg daily, whereas adult cats need only about 50 mg daily.

Taurine is a precursor in the formation of bile acids, and thus also contributes to the digestion of fatty foods.
